A world near to extinction

In Johannesburg, crime has been on the rise for several years. The local police are completely overwhelmed. It therefore decided to use a company specialized in robotics (Tetravaal) to provide them with police robots. In the objective to maintain order and address the lack of qualified personnel.

That’s where Deon comes in.

Deon, the hero of the story?

Deon Wilson, played by actor Dev Patel, is a young engineer. He designed and developed the artificial intelligence that makes up the Scouts (Police Robots) program. For his part, Deon creates a new form of artificial intelligence that imitates human consciousness.

He decides to present his new prowess to the boss of the company where he works for. But his new project is refused. So Deon, who does not intend to give up so easily, comes to steal a robot and equip him from his new program. But what will follow will no longer depend on him.

A robot unlike any other

Chappie was then born. Capable of thinking and feeling, this robot gradually learns for itself. And he’ll soon notice that life isn’t as easy as it looks.

The morale of the film

The way Chappie grows up in the film makes us realise that it is our choices and relationships that define our existence.

With the refusal and eventual banning of Deon's AI, we see that the film's antagonist, Vincent, fears the will to make the Scouts intelligent robots. Since this would endanger the dominance of man over machine.

Man wants to be able to control what he creates. This desire for power is very often present in Divergent. So robots must be controlled by humans to avoid loss of control.
